Design is my way of exploring, simplifying complexity, and making technology more human. From building my own toys in the Congo to discovering design through creative constraints, every challenge shaped my path. Here’s how I came of age as a designer.

Design is my way of exploring, simplifying complexity, and making technology more human. From building my own toys in the Congo to discovering design through creative constraints, every challenge shaped my path. Here’s how I came of age as a designer.

Early childhood

Transforming Scarcity into a Catalyst for Creativity.

Growing up in DR Congo with 10 siblings, scarcity forced us to be resourceful. With limited toys, we crafted our own from discarded materials—plastic bags, wires, and rags—turning what others saw as junk into treasured playthings.

As one of the oldest, I found joy in making toys for my younger siblings, sparking their imagination and fueling my passion for design. This early exposure to creativity showed me the magic of bringing ideas to life, inspiring me to pursue a career as a maker and designer.

Spark

Witnessing the power of effective design as an equalizer.

As an architecture student at UC Berkeley, I faced a challenge—using an iPad Pro instead of a traditional computer. But I soon discovered a world of possibilities with apps like Shapr3D, Umake, Concept, and Affinity Designer, which made every task seamless.

The true power of intuitive design hit me when I taught my 5-year-old nephew to build a chair in under 10 minutes. His awe proved how great UX can level the playing field, making technology accessible to all. This experience deepened my love for UI/UX and showed me that thoughtful design turns limitations into opportunities.

Finding my voice

From Community Insights to Impactful Design

My journey into UI/UX started with active participation in Shapr3D’s forum, where I shared UX feedback that led to interviews and deeper collaboration. I also connected with Umake co-founder & CEO Evi, brainstorming ideas that refined my problem-solving skills. These experiences taught me that great design starts with conversation and collaboration.

Seeing my ideas influence real products fueled my passion for thoughtful design. Later, joining Loopchat as a UI/UX designer reinforced my confidence—watching my work improve user experiences at scale pushed me to advocate for users and challenge design norms. With every project, I continue to refine my voice, blending community-driven insights with impactful design decisions.

Our objective is to develop and implement innovative techniques that prioritize the enhancement of coral reef growth and resilience, with a primary focus on carbon sequestration. At CactusX, our imaginary company, we are dedicated to harnessing the innate abilities of coral reefs to effectively capture and store significant amounts of carbon dioxide, thereby making a valuable contribution to global climate change mitigation efforts.

To achieve this objective, we will employ advanced coral propagation methods, leveraging cutting-edge research findings and scientific expertise. By accelerating the natural process of reef formation, we aim to create optimal conditions for coral reefs to thrive and adapt in the face of changing environmental conditions. Through strategic interventions, such as promoting assisted coral reproduction and implementing innovative habitat restoration techniques, we will foster an environment conducive to enhanced growth rates and improved resilience.

By maximizing coral reef growth, we aim to amplify their capacity to capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide. Coral reefs possess unique biological mechanisms that allow them to sequester carbon dioxide effectively. As the reefs grow and develop, they incorporate carbon into their skeletal structures, effectively locking it away for extended periods. By facilitating accelerated growth rates and promoting the establishment of robust coral colonies, we will amplify the carbon sequestration potential of these vital ecosystems.

Our approach will rely on interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging leading scientists, conservation experts, and local communities. By integrating the latest advancements in coral propagation and restoration techniques, we will generate valuable insights and refine our methodologies to optimize the efficiency and scalability of our efforts. Furthermore, we will establish comprehensive monitoring systems and employ advanced analytics to quantify and evaluate the carbon sequestration potential of the enhanced coral reefs accurately.
